Bluehost Review: the Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

Bluehost Review

Bluehost is one of the oldest and largest brand names when it comes to web hosting. They’re an officially recommended hosting provider by WordPress.org.

We believe Bluehost is the best cheap hosting service thanks to their affordability, reputation, usability, and the ability to grow with your business.

With Bluehost shared hosting plan, you get a free domain, free SSL, and more. Once you outgrow the traffic allowance on shared hosting, you can easily upgrade to their VPS and dedicated server options.

You can also save on Bluehost plans by paying annually.

Added to that, with Bluehost, you can also create custom email accounts for your business or brand. This is available for all Bluehost hosting plans.

On that note, you’ll be interested to know that Bluehost offers different hosting options including shared, dedicated, VPS, WordPress, and reseller hosting.

Bluehost complies with all the modern standards for hardware and software. They consistently strive for excellence by regularly improving their server hardware infrastructure as well as overall hosting experience. In an effort to make it extremely easy for beginners to start a website, they’ve revamped their user dashboard. Bluehost Cheap Hosting Review

bluehost shared web hosting

Bluehost’s cheap hosting also known as shared hosting is a perfect option if you’re just starting out and are only expecting low traffic volume. In a shared hosting server, your website shares hosting resources with other websites hosted on the same server. This is what allows hosting companies to keep the costs low.

While shared hosting providers often say unmetered bandwidth, if your website starts attracting a high load of traffic, then your hosting provider will ask you to upgrade to a higher plan that is faster and more reliable than shared hosting. Cloud hosting utilizes multiple servers, so in the case of a high traffic surge, the automatic failover process will switch you to another hosting server to ensure fast performance.

With every shared hosting plan, you get dozens of free website scripts to easily launch your website, blog or an online store, including WordPress, Joomla, and Drupal with one-click installers.

You’ll also get a free domain name and free SSL certificate to protect your website from data interception and misuse. This reassures your customers that their data is being sent over a secure connection, which can also entice your customers to do business with you.

As part of Bluehost’s shared hosting plan, they also offer free marketing bonuses to help you get your website off the ground. We highly recommend them for all small businesses.

In case you’re not satisfied, you can always take advantage of their 30-day money back guarantee, but it’s highly unlikely that you’ll need that!

  • Free domain and site builder
  • 1-click WordPress installs
  • Unlimited Disk Space and industry-leading hardware
  • Regular price $9.99/ mo. but our users pay $2.75/ mo.

Bluehost Dedicated Hosting Review

bluehost-dedicated-hosting

With Bluehost dedicated hosting, you’re renting a physical server exclusively for your website. The best part about dedicated servers is that you don’t share resources with any other sites, so the server can be configured specifically for your needs.

Built on OpenStack technology, Bluehost offers reliable dedicated hosting at a reasonable price. You can choose from three different pricing plans, and each plan comes with an enhanced cPanel that allows you to easily upgrade your storage space on the fly without admin intervention.

With Bluehost dedicated hosting, you get a minimum of 4 cores per server, 1TB of RAID storage, and between four and 16 gigs of available RAM. You can even have more than one hosting service in a single account, including shared, VPS or dedicated hosting.

Unlike other dedicated server hosting which takes hours or days to set up your account, Bluehost has the ability to instantly provision their dedicated servers, so you can get started immediately.

Because Bluehost owns their own data center, they regularly invest in top-notch hardware and infrastructure to ensure their dedicated servers are top of the line. Bluehost does an excellent job in making sure that your server stays updated with new OS changes and security fixes.

However, when you start getting into the advanced server optimization and configuration, your experience will vary from each support / system administrator that you talk with. Sometimes, you will be asked to pay additional fees to install certain scripts or modules on the server.

Overall though, Bluehost’s dedicated hosting offers the best value for the money.

  • Storage – 500GB to 1000GB
  • RAM – 4GB to 16GB
  • Regular price is 125.99/ mo. but our users pay $79.99/ mo.
  • 24/7 Chat, and Phone Support

Bluehost VPS Hosting Review

bluehost vps

After shared hosting, cloud and VPS hosting are the next step up. VPS is short for Virtual Private Server. With VPS hosting, while you’ll be sharing resources with other sites, you have a lot more dedicated power and flexibility for your site.

Built using open source technology like OpenStack and KVM, Bluehost offers VPS hosting that’s both powerful and easy to use. Because Bluehost owns their own datacenters, they invest in state of the art hardware to unlock breakthrough speeds.

With its VPS plans, Bluehost offers you up to four cores and 2GB to 8GB of RAM with guaranteed resources. Every VPS configuration comes with improved cPanel interface, featuring everything found in a shared hosting interface along with special tools for your VPS management.

Unlike our VPS hosting services, Bluehost’s VPS is instantly provisioned, meaning you don’t have to wait hours or days to have your account activated. You can instantly log in and start building your website.

Bluehost’s VPS servers are designed to support Secure Shell access, log file access and more. You also get SSD (Solid State Drive) storage ranging from 30 GB to 120 GB. The biggest advantage of VPS hosting is that you have guaranteed resources allocated towards your website, so it can have maximum performance and uptime.

You have the ability to do multi-server management, have access control, can obtain root access for advanced configuration and more. Bluehost’s VPS offering is amongst the best in the industry for its price. Bluehost smart support team will be there to help you along every step of the way.

  • Storage – 30GB to 120GB
  • RAM – 2GB to 8GB
  • Regular price $39.99/ mo. but you pay $19.99/ mo.

Bluehost WordPress Hosting Review

bluehost hosting discount

Bluehost is one of the largest hosting brands in the WordPress ecosystem. Officially recommended by WordPress.org, Bluehost stands out among the crowd with its strong WordPress offering.

With the WordPress plans, they offer 1-click WordPress install, a free domain name, and a free SSL certificate for the price of $2.75 per month, which is the best when it comes to the quality of service they offer.

We recommend selecting either the Choice Plus or Pro plan. You’ll get unlimited SSD storage, AI driven templates, free domain privacy, and free CDN. With the Pro plan, you’ll also get a dedicated IP and optimized CPU resources.

Bluehost regularly contributes to the WordPress open-source project, and their team is highly-trained to help answer any WordPress question that you may have. They also offer premium themes and plugins through their subsidiary, MOJO Marketplace. You can also get access to their 1-on-1 expert WordPress support through their WP Live service.

In recent years, they have invested heavily in improving their WordPress offering by renovating the onboarding flow, bundling services like security, CDN, caching, staging features, and a whole lot more.

Though it’s not a managed WordPress hosting, if you are just starting your WordPress site, then there’s no better hosting provider than Bluehost on the market that offers the features they do at a very reasonable price point!

Bluehost WooCommerce Hosting Review

bluehost woocommerce plans

WooCommerce is the most popular eCommerce platform on the internet. Due to its recent growth, many web hosting companies have started offering optimized WooCommerce hosting plans.

Bluehost due to its strong relationship with the WordPress community was among the first to build WooCommerce specific hosting plans. Their WooCommerce hosting plan comes with the WooCommerce plugin pre-installed along with the Storefront theme.

With Bluehost’s WooCommerce hosting, you get everything you need to start an online store. You get a dedicated IP address, positive SSL security, a dedicated support line, and more.

Bluehost is also an officially recommended WooCommerce hosting provider. Bluehost makes sure that you have everything you need to start an online store on a budget.

The WooCommerce hosting is built on top of the Bluehost cloud hosting infrastructure so it can handle larger load and traffic than a typical shared hosting plan. Often users get confused between the WordPress hosting vs WooCommerce hosting option that Bluehost offers.

While you can use either plan, we recommend using the WooCommerce hosting plan for WooCommerce sites for optimal results.

Bluehost Pros:

After trying Bluehost’s web hosting service, here’s what we liked about them.

  1. Low Introductory Pricing: The pricing for the Bluehost web hosting packages starts at as low as $2.75 / month, which is a hefty discount compared to the regular price of $9.99 / month. Bluehost’s pricing gives you really good value for money considering their uptime guarantee and consistent support you will receive.
  2. No Hidden Fees: You won’t find any hidden fees like setup fees while creating or renewing your account with Bluehost. While you can find a few hosting addons such as Codeguard Basic or Bluehost SEO Tools start, you just need to unselect them when you sign up to avoid any additional cost.
  3. Easy to Use: Bluehost provides a simple and user-friendly dashboard to manage your websites. It also offers a cPanel that includes several options, including 1-click WordPress installation. The setup takes less than a few minutes and your website will be ready to go live on the internet.
  4. Customer Support: You’ll get premium-quality 24/7 customer service from a team of experts. Bluehost offers live chat support and phone support to all its users.
  5. Scalability: If you’re a growing business and you want to upgrade your hosting plan, Bluehost is highly scalable and lets you move from a basic plan to a high-tier plan (like Choice Plus plan and Pro plan) in just a few clicks.

Bluehost Cons:

Now let’s take a look at a few limitations of Bluehost.

  1. High renewal rates: Just like every other web hosting provider, the renewal price of Bluehost is also a bit higher than its introductory price. However, our users can still get up to 73% off for the first year.
  2. Basic website builder: Bluehost offers a basic WordPress website builder with a drag and drop interface. It starts at $2.95 per month and can be used on unlimited websites. This may be enough for beginners and bloggers but you’ll be better offer installing WordPress on your new website and opting for a builder like SeedProd or Elementor.

Bluehost Uptime Guarantee & Speed Test Reports

If you want a high-speed website, choosing fast web hosting is compulsory.

We used Bluehost to conduct a few different speed tests on our website that gives a clear picture of how the hosting performs. Here are some of the following testing tools that we used:

  • Pingdom
  • Load Impact
  • Bitcatcha

bluehost speed test

According to our Pingdom’s website speed test, we found that our test site loads in less than two seconds for a server in New York City. That means the site is faster than 94% of all tested sites.

Just like the speed test, it’s imperative to analyze whether your hosting service of choice can survive a traffic surge.

For our traffic surge test, we used a popular testing tool Load Impact, and sent some virtual users (VU) to our site. They gradually built up to 100 visitors at a time to see how the server would handle the traffic surge.

In the chart below, you can find blue (VUs active) and green lines (VU load time) which represent the number of virtual visitors sent to the testing site and the time it took to load the web page for the respective number of users on the site.

loadimpact bluehost

From our test, it’s evident that Bluehost server can perform without any trouble regardless of the number of visitors present on the site.

If you’re looking for a high performing hosting provider, Bluehost server could be the best choice.

It’s also vital to note that no downtime has been recorded during our hosting performance test. For a detailed look at the server response time, you can see the screenshot below.

uptime bluehost

Bluehost Server Response Time

Without a doubt, images often account for most of the downloadable bytes, meaning publishing too many images on a page can negatively impact your page loading time.

Not to mention, a content-heavy site would take more time to load than a lightweight website. Aside from speed tests, we’ll also have to conduct a server response time test by ignoring the content of our site.

For this test, we used another testing tool known as Bitcatcha.

Bitcatcha works quite differently from Pingdom.

With Bitcatcha, you can analyze server response time from around the globe by ignoring the content of the site.

It averages the loading speed of your website from eight different global locations: New York, Los Angeles, London, Brazil, India, Singapore, Japan, and Australia. The speed for each location is measured three separate times, and then the results are averaged.

With this test, you get a broader overview of how your server responds globally to the page requests.

bluehost server response tests

You can see that our Bluehost test site was rated C by Bitcatcha.

While the web hosting server responded in just a fraction of a second in the United States, the response time was comparably high in all other locations. However, the site still responded in less than a second.

That means if your target audience is in the United States, Bluehost could be a great choice for you. On the flip side, if your target audience isn’t in the United States, you might consider using a local hosting server for faster page rendering.

Support

(5.0 / 5.0)

Bluehost Customer Service

Bluehost customer support

Founded in 2003, Bluehost is one of the 20 largest web hosting companies, powering over 2 million websites worldwide. Bluehost is also #1 recommended web hosting company by WordPress.org.

The Bluehost website has a vast knowledge base consisting of articles, guides and how-to’s that can answer to all your questions regarding your web hosting account.

Bluehost friendly 24/7 support team is available via phone and live chat to resolve your hosting related issues quickly. They also have an in-house team of WordPress experts who can resolve any WordPress related inquiries.

The big downside of Bluehost support is that recently they’ve made the decision to discontinue ticket support in an effort to focus more on providing personal and direct support through phone and chat. This can be frustrating to users with more advanced issues that may take a bit longer to resolve.

Ease of Use

(5.0 / 5.0)

Built on cPanel, Bluehost has a custom interface that lets you easily manage your website and server without hassle.

They also offer 1-click install option for popular website builder tools like WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, Magento, Weebly, Prestashop and many more.

  1. Mixed review for BlueHost.
*I have had good service and customer support
    * I have waited an hour to get to the first level of support- horrible music
    * I’ve had white screens of death that we not fixed form restoration from back-up
*I’ve gone through long periods of 99.9% uptime
*I’ve had a couple month of less than 90% uptime according to Pingdom
*Bluehost tried upgrade my service even after I restored my renewal setting to my normal settings.
*Bluehost decided I should renew for 3 years instead of 1 Year
If you have great service from BlueHost great. Not everyone does.
    BlueHost cpanel is great

I am giving DreamHost a try for my newest site and podcast home base..

  2. Terrible phone support. I have been on hold for 47 minutes now, waiting for billing to answer.

  3. Like many here, I’ve been using BH for years. In that time I have set up many client sites there. But no more. Their support has fallen off markedly over the past year or two with extremely long queues and inconsistent quality in the support reps – some are well-trained and other not at all.

It seems to be the nature of hosting. You find a great host and within a couple years you watch them slowly dwindle until they become just another go-daddy.

  4. Where’d you move to? I’m looking for one who’s CS I can reach on the phone without holding for half a day.

  5. Its not from BlueHost , Someone is referring u to bluehost.

    Affiliate Links

  6. BlueHost is sending emails presenting themselves as GoDaddy; claiming that peoples accounts are suspended for non-payment. Everything in the email seems completely legit for GoDaddy; but if you click the link to resolve the issue, it takes you to BlueHost.com.

  7. I have been very happy with Bluehost hosting, but I see no advantage to having them also be the registrar other than convenience of having just one bill. I usually see what sales or deals are going on through several registrars. I say just find whoever seems to be cheap on domains and fills your needs. Google Domains for example gives you dynamic dns and domain privacy for free, which you won’t find most places.

  8. Blue Host is generally okay. The server my site is on is down today for a DDOS attack. Has been going on for more than 12 hours. If you think 12+ hours of downtime is good, so long as the hosting is cheap, this is the company for you.

  9. J. Prendergast July 29, 2015 at 10:20 pm

I was with Bluehost shared hosting for years until they started outbound filtering of email which causes the mail forwarding set in cpanel to break. The effect of the change was that you would get some mail forwarded, but other mail would drop and you would never know. I had to move my hosting to another company since not receiving some emails is not something I could tolerate.

  10. Bluehost puts an asterisk on all their prices, but they don’t explain anywhere what the catch is.

  11. Help Me to Choice…. OPTIMIZED HOSTING for WordPress (blogger) or VPS HOSTING (Standard) on Bluehost which are the great package for my growing website? is there any suggestion Please….

Thank you so much in advance
    David

  12. I’ve used Bluehost for a while for several websites and I haven’t had any major problems.

I’ve had a few minor issues, but the staff have also helped me put things right in a matter of minutes.

I also like the WordPress installer.

My only dislike is the pricing of the domain names. Not a big problem, I can just register my domain names through GoDaddy.

  13. In the main I’ve been quite happy with BlueHost (though my usage has been very very light so I haven’t had any issues with traffic).

I wasn’t particularly impressed in my last invoice to find I had an increase in costs and an associated entry “Upgrade Plus Web Hosting” – I had no knowledge of any ‘upgrade’ nor any need for it and in my view should have had some correspondence to say what it was at the very least.
I had been thinking about cancelling the hosting anyway (I’ve not used it at all the past 18 months) and the price increase was the push required.

  14. Bluehost used to be a decent host.

These days went from bad to worse. Support takes at least more than 10 minutes to respond to your question.

I purchased a SSL certificate more than 10 days ago and it was not implemented. I’ve contacted Support 4 times already for this issue and nothing.

    Very frustrating!

  15. I wanted to create a small WordPress website and I decided to host it on BlueHost shared hosting because they are reccomended by WordPress themselves.

I must say that they are really good.

They actully have a big blue button in the control panel that says Install WordPress which is really helpful.

I just installed WordPress with MOJO Marketplace and focused on my website.

Overall, BlueHost are great if you just want hassle-free WordPress hosting.

  16. BlueHost seem pretty good.

I have a WordPress website hosted with them and I haven’t had any issues.

I especially like the 1-click installation with MOJO Marketplace.

I would highly recommend them if you just want to host a basic WordPress website.

  17. Beware! Awful hosting. Crooks and tricksters. They promise full refund you get part of it. They tried to cheat me many times during only 2 weeks. They tried to charge $50 for a wordpress theme each month instead of one time fee. Beware of these crooks.

  18. We have used bluehost for three years. Service interruptions are common. Hold times are awful. I was just on hold for 40 minutes with tech support trying to resolve yet another service interruption. Called the sales number and it was answered by a person in three seconds.

  19. If you like a confusing control panel and waiting on hold for 30 minutes for technical support, Bluehost is for you!

  20. I was a Bluehost customer for many years, and back in the days when Matt Heaton ran the company things were great. Over the past two years their service has deteriorated badly; lots of down-time, auto-renewed accounts when set to “manual”, renewed an account which was not mine on my credit card!

Starting mid-2014 I gradually closed / shifted all my sites from BH to other hosts. Sorry BH – you were excellent under Matt Heaton, but these days… forget it.

  21. I’ve not been a customer of Bluehost, but one of my friends has an account with them for several years. In the past year, my friend’s server kept getting hacked. Upon contacting Bluehost, my friend couldn’t get his site back up despite that Bluehost said they would help. Mind you that my friend is a small business owner who has little knowledge about web stuff, and I believe the majority of hosting account owners are just like him. Therefore, they would naturally turn to their hosting companies for help when things go down. Unfortunately, Bluehost has failed twice in helping him out in the past year, big time.

My friend’s website got hacked sometime in May or June of 2014. Bluehost managed to upsell him and make him purchase their sitelock service. My friend paid for the service, but Bluehost didn’t get his websites back up. In the end I had to jump in and troubleshoot the code for him and remove/replace the hacked files. Months later, his server got hacked again. This type, with a different type of attack that result in a similar end result. The code were inserted into many locations in his server, and seemed to have been spreading by day. My friend turned to me for help again, and in the end I went through each of the contaminated file to fix the problems and got the websites up again.

We don’t know what has allowed the hack to take place, especially given that my friend had purchased the sitelock function with Bluehost. I was concerned that it would happen again, so I wanted to zip up his current root folder to create a backup on the server. You know, I just don’t want to download potentially contaminated files onto my computer plus he’s got a huge root folder. I tried zipping up his files in the file manager inside cPanel, it takes forever and I never ended up seeing the finished compressed file in the server. I then tried to create a backup via ManageWP. ManageWP generated an error that had to do with the server killing compression processes due to timeout issues. So I got on live chat with Bluehost on my friend’s behalf. I began the chat with them at 11am and now it’s 1:04pm. The guy I chatted with wasn’t able to fix it, and he just transferred me to another person when I hadn’t had a chance to see what he’s typed yet. Now I’m with another person and may have to waste even more time for him to say the same thing the last rep did. The last rep basically asked me to use FTP clients like filezilla. I told him that filezilla doesn’t have the function to compress files in remote servers. He then asked if I knew about SSH… However, zipping up a folder in your server shouldn’t be this huge hassle at all. I have hosting accounts with 2 other companies, and their file managers can compress my root folders under 20 minutes even if they’re large files.

I especially find it unacceptable when my friend didn’t get the support from Bluehost to fix anything. He has been paying almost double the price of what other hosting companies would charge for a similar package, and he’s not getting what he deserves to have out of this deal at all. Bottom line is, there’re better service providers out there who are more responsible and would cost less.

  22. I am also using bluehost for last five years, services offered by them is good but their terms and conditions changes time to time. I faced lot of problem with this hosting and planning to switch over to other. The reasons:
    1. They automatically upgraded my hosting account during the renew process. when asked to customer people they can’t downgrade my account.
    2. Customer support is really pathetic. They can’t solve problems efficiently.

  23. Bluehost has been far better over the last year than 1&1 internet, my first hosting provider for a few months after starting my website.

But there are MAJOR problems with Bluehost — which is something I am realizing only after month 10 and trying — with serious hiccups — to upgrade from Bluehost VPS to Bluehost Dedicated Servers.

What Bluehost does well is help get a site up ASAP. a simple site, like for a small business, will be fine with bluehost. their people actually will assist with wordpress-related problems and issues, which 1&1 would not even touch.

What Bluehost is AWFUL at is far worse, however.

Once your site actually starts to get traffic and scale, Bluehost falls apart. The service seems set up for sites with zero – 50 daily visitors. My site on a dedicated Premium Bluehost account struggles to cope with 3000 unique visitors daily.

To top it off, when something is REALLY WRONG — they have no clue how to fix it. you will spend hours if not days calling back, explaining the entire issue again, and then getting the same crappy story.

their CSR people are nice, but generally spotty in being able to identify any causes beyond the absolute basics. once a problem goes to an “admin” — you need to walk away.

Either it will be fixed in 15 minutes, or prepare to wait up to three weeks for zero reply or help or updates.

Once an “admin” is working on an issue, the regular CSR people cannot touch it, nor provide updates.

    THE BIGGEST PROBLEM
is the price. prepare to spend up to $350 monthly for service and servers that are SLOW AND FAILURE_PRONE.

prepare to receive zero actual expertise when you call, and BEWARE that many of the customer-service people will recommend solutions that actually make a site far, far worse in the long run.

Finally, when you do upgrade to the DEDICATED SERVER, expect very little/no improvement in performance versus the VPS accounts.

Overall, I am thinking of leaving Bluehost and am spending time investigating web servers FOR SCALE and ACTUAL EXPERTISE.

For what Bluehost bills, they are a D+ solution overall.

    And the servers crash ***FREQUENTLY***

  24. Got my annual Bluehost hosting renewal notice and just before clicking “okay” was told that my new 1-year “upgrade plus web hosting” would be $143.88 vs. the ~$80 I used to pay! I’m now on Chat with a customer service rep saying that I don’t need “upgrade plus” shared hosting but am not being given an alternative in the checkout cart. The chat is taking forever (with a robot?)

Meanwhile their site shows these rates: http://www.bluehost.com/shared

Addendum–the robot just quoted me a price of $81.49 and says they’ll put through the order for me. Hope this works…

  25. Too expensive for what I’m doing, there are a lot of there webhosting companies now that can do pretty much the same job the A LOT cheaper. I tried to renew and they pretty much doubled the original price trig to charging almost 150 a year. I didn’t have any problems, but they need some better prices
