How to Remove CSS Classes From Menus, Except the Ones You Want

Snippets by IsItWP

Are you looking for a way to remove CSS classes from menus except the ones you want? While there’s probably a plugin for this, we have created a quick code snippet that you can use to remove CSS classes from menus except the ones you want in WordPress.

Instructions:

All you have to do is add this code to your theme’s functions.php file or in a site-specific plugin:

add_filter('nav_menu_css_class', 'my_css_attributes_filter', 100, 1);
add_filter('nav_menu_item_id', 'my_css_attributes_filter', 100, 1);
add_filter('page_css_class', 'my_css_attributes_filter', 100, 1);
function my_css_attributes_filter($var) {
 $newnavclasses = is_array($var) ? array_intersect($var, array('current-menu-item', 'current_page_item', 'current-page-ancestor', 'current-page-parent')) : ''; //modify to the classes you want to keep
	 return $newnavclasses;
}

Note: If this is your first time adding code snippets in WordPress, then please refer to our guide on how to properly add code snippets in WordPress, so you don’t accidentally break your site.
