Create Most Recent Posts Dashboard Widget

Snippets by IsItWP

Do you want to create a new dashboard widget in WordPress showing the five most recent posts? While there’s probably a plugin for this, we have created a quick code snippet that you can use to create most recent posts dashboard widget in WordPress.

Instructions:

All you have to do is add this code to your theme’s functions.php file or in a site-specific plugin:

function wps_recent_posts_dw() {
?>
   <ol>
     <?php
          global $post;
          $args = array( 'numberposts' => 5 );

          $myposts = get_posts( $args );
		foreach( $myposts as $post ) :  setup_postdata($post); ?>
		    <li> (<? the_date('Y / n / d'); ?>) <a href="<?php the_permalink(); ?>"><?php the_title(); ?></a></li>
	  <?php endforeach; ?>
   </ol>
<?php
}

function add_wps_recent_posts_dw() {
       wp_add_dashboard_widget( 'wps_recent_posts_dw', __( 'Recent Posts' ), 'wps_recent_posts_dw' );
}
add_action('wp_dashboard_setup', 'add_wps_recent_posts_dw' );

Note: If this is your first time adding code snippets in WordPress, then please refer to our guide on how to properly copy / paste code snippets in WordPress, so you don’t accidentally break your site.
